Toothache/Gum Disease

I’ve had a history of brushing too hard and as a result have some gum recession. I never flossed to take care of my gums, and two months ago I went to the dentist and was told I have gingivitis. Since then I’ve done everything possible to fix my gums (mouthwash, flossing, brushing properly) but the redness hasn’t gone away.

This past week my bottom canine began aching and is quite sensitive and it won’t go away. Could I have developed periodontitis in that time span? Could I have had it this whole time and the dentist was wrong? I’m really stressing over this right now. Thanks for the help
