Question about incision and drainage

I attended A&E last night due to a large swelling on my face around a tooth that I had a root canal on about 6 years ago. I was in absolute agony and due to coronavirus couldn’t visit the dentist so 111 advised me to attend A&E.

Whilst I was there I had an X-ray and it was decided that the gum should be cut and drained. Whilst the dr was doing this procedure he was scraping my jaw bone quite vigorously to ‘pull the puss out’. Is this normal? Once the anaesthetic wore off I was actually in more pain that when I got there and I now seem to have a hard lump on my jaw aside from the obviously swelling.

Also is it possible to hit/ damage a nerve there? Because I’ve been prescribed oral morphine and that isn’t even controlling the pain.

Any info is appreciated thanks.
