Can orthodontics and/or pulling teeth lead to a later worsening bite (overjet to open) and jaw pain?

Question is essentially in the title. Had braces twice. Before braces I had an overbite that, after each successive round of braces, formed into an open bite. Before all my orthodontic work I had two upper incisors pulled. In addition, my midline was centered before braces but it deviated one way during or after my second round of braces. I've had TMJ pain since braces round 1, and I was tested for condylar issues - scans showed some unilateral degeneration, and a bone scan showed no active resorption. Teeth now protrude post-braces. (Braces in my teens, late 20s F.)

I am now considering orthognathic surgery, but I am puzzled as to either do orthognathic surgery or total TMJ replacement surgery (the last being a want-to-avoid surgery.) My surgeon has listed a few potential reasons for why my bite worsened, 1) caused by RA (still being tested but I really don't think this is it), or 2) condylar resorption which symptomatically matches the most, but if I have it it's been minor/it's just arthritis, or 3) she is saying that the removal of two of my teeth plus camouflage braces is what actually lead to all these issues. Tongue thrusting is not thought to be the cause.

My question is, can (bad) orthodontics and/or pulling out teeth really lead to all such problems like jaw pain and an open bite? If it can cause this, why? I am worried that just doing orthognathic surgery poses the risk of my bite returning to a pre-surgery state, and I definitely cannot afford a second surgery lol. I also worry it will just make my jaw pain worse. (Then again, the problems may never return so it's a gamble!)

Thanks!
