From what I’ve read were born somewhat symmetrically when it comes to movement. As time goes along we become asymmetrical.
I’ve seen people with very symmetrical jaws, and I wonder if that means they have awareness of both sides of the jaw all the time, or if they move their food around without a dominant side.
For me awareness can change based on health. Sometimes I’m more aware of my jaws, other times I have no awareness of the jaws, and more awareness of the tongue.
When I’m chewing on my left side only for example, with me, my left side jaw and teeth are engaged, my right side is not. But my right side jaw is moving up and down just as much as when my left side is dominant and doing the chewing, but I have no ‘manual’ awareness of the right side when that’s happening. Same if I move the food to the other side of the jaw. When I have a lot in my mouth I would say both sides of the jaw are engaged. Especially with foods like raw romaine, where both sides of the jaw are affected by a firm, crisp leaf.
I’m moreso curious because I’ve had recent severe TMJ issues (good now), and it seems one side of my jaw has been overused for many years, and my other side has very much not. I now know I’ve had lighter TMJ issues for years, but had no idea. And the side that has not been used as often engages differently, and has no ability to have TMJ issues. I’m finding that I have such a wired awareness of my dominant right side jaw, that it actually tenses up and releases as part of a anxiety response. And I have vivid awareness and inability to relax that right side jaw accidentally on rare occasions.
I’ve recently spent more time engaging my non-dominant and found huge success with that. But I’m not having dysfunction of mechanical chewing or anything like that.
I’m just kind of dumbfounded how jaw function should go.
