New dentist is taking over... do I need a new oral surgeon referral?

I just got an e-mail today that basically, my dentist sold her practice and a new dentist is taking over for her, effective immediately.

At my checkup a few months back, she said I should start planning to get my wisdom teeth out, and she wrote me a referral on a sheet of paper for an oral surgeon.

I never got around to calling the oral surgeon because by the time I finished doing all my research (if my insurance would cover twilight sedation, budgeting, etc.), you-know-what happened and things got hectic. I'm hoping to get the ball rolling again once I get called back to work (I work in healthcare but I'm on furlough right now, I'd rather not make any solid plans until I get called back).

I'm in New York state if it makes a difference-- do you think my old dentist's referral will still be accepted, or should I wait until I see the new dentist and get a new one from him? (My next checkup is set for July, but based on the e-mail it may have to be pushed out.)

Or would it be a good idea anyway to establish care with him first before scheduling a consultation with the surgeon? (I totally trusted my old dentist's judgement on my wisdom teeth situation, I just don't know if it would make things go smoother.)
