Gum Recession at age 20 (Looking for a 2nd opinion)

Hi everybody! First off, thanks so much for dealing with teeth. I couldn't do it, for sure.

So, I'm 20 and went to the dentist today because I have extreme pain near the root/gum of my upper right canine. I've almost cried every time I even gently brush that area in the past week. The gum has recession, but isn't super severe looking. I can feel the ridge where my gum once was though.

The damage was absolutely done my me brushing hard with a medium brush because I thought it did better cleaning (I'm a fool and I know better now.)

My dentist said to just get some sensodyne and a very soft toothbrush and we will see what happens.

My issue is.... I'm 20 and I'm in this much pain. I am so afraid of this getting worse because I heard gums don't grow back. I don't want to just throw sensodyne at it and hope it doesn't progress.

I brushed with sensodyne and a very soft toothbrush VERY gently and still almost cried today.

Does anyone have thoughts/advice on this?
