I am an American located in the far north of Sweden who has had dental work in Sweden for the first time. I haven't been to the dentist for three years, and recently had a baby last October. I've had tooth pain on and off during the last year or so, so I decided to finally go to the dentist. Right off the bat I was told I have an infection above a root canal tooth (a molar in upper jaw) and also a decayed molar in the bottom jaw where the pulp is close to tooth decay and may need a root canal. The dentist decided the infection wasn't serious, and the decayed tooth in the bottom jaw would be fine with a filling. Then the hygienist cleaned my teeth harshly (it was the most painful cleaning I have had!). Ever since I've had pain and more problems, even after three fillings that the dentist originally recommended! Two days after the cleaning I had increased sensitivity, and noticed a bump formed in my upper gums near the root canal infection tooth - I went to the dentist and he confirmed it was an abscess, we decided it would be best to just extract the tooth. He said I could book the appointment when he had an open time, which I did, but the pain became so severe that I had to come in for an earlier emergency appointment (I wish he had fit me in earlier to prevent me from getting to the point of extreme pain). Now I am at a week of healing after the tooth extraction, but now I have another onset of pain on the bottom jaw where I had a filling done. A few weeks ago it started as a sensitive feeling, and the dentist said it is the tooth adjusting to the filling, but now today it is an ongoing inflammation feeling that is calmed by drinking cold water every 10 minutes. I took ibuprofin 400mg and it has not helped, a sharp pain returns every 10 minutes and will remain if I do not let water sit in my mouth (it has been this way for two hours now). I am going to the dentist next week to have stitches removed for the extracted tooth, but I am wondering if I should go in earlier for this sharp pain that continues to return. I wonder if it is a result of my body fighting the infection? The dentist said the infection would go away within a week, which should be now. I really don't know what to think of this dentist. I have a 7 month old baby and really don't want to be dealing with this. The population is so low where I live that there is not much selection for dentists - other dentists have waiting lines, while the one I am going to now is an hour drive away.
