Bonded tooth repair broke after two months, is that normal?

Backstory: I have a tooth (top right incisor) that was broken in half when I was 10. I had it repaired with bonding and it lasted 13 years until I got it replaced at 23 due to yellowing. That bonding didn’t discolor and lasted almost 17 years until it chipped two months go.

I went to my long time dentist which I kind of trust (I don’t trust dentists very often) and he didn’t remove the remaining old bonding before repairing the chip and charged me $500. Last night I’m eating pizza and pull on the crust with my front teeth and bam, out comes the entire bonded tooth.

Now I’m sitting here drinking my coffee with a good whistling potential wondering if this is normal (I don’t think it is) and should I expect my dentist to repair this for free?

Thanks!
