Baby Teeth Affecting Permanent Teeth

My daughter (6) lost one of her top front baby teeth today. The tooth had been loose for a long while, but she was adamant about not pulling it or allowing anyone else to pull it. Tonight, as she was munching popcorn, it finally came out.

Beneath the tooth you could already see the adult tooth emerging. My mother-in-law commented that adult teeth will come in crooked if the baby teeth are still there as they emerge. I had never heard this, and my limited research on the internet has not indicated this. I saw that teeth can come in crooked if a child used a pacifier or thumb-sucked long-term, inherited a small mouth, had facial trauma, or prematurely lost baby teeth. My daughter’s emerging tooth looks fine.

Please tell me, is this just an old wive’s tale?
